2020-09-05 › Eight Factories Closed in Herat: Industry Owners
Eight factories were closed in Herat in the last two weeks over lack of support by the government, problems in customs offices, and influx of imported goods in local markets, according to the Afghanistan Chamber of Industries and Mines in Herat.
The factories that halted operations were producing cookies, chocolates, and marbles products.
“They have stopped operation over high influx of imports through the customs in recent days. Some investors have faced financial recession,” said Hamidullah Khadim, head of Herat Chamber of Industries and Mines.
Factory owners said they shuttered their factories over lack of ability to compete with the imported products in local markets.
“Foreign marbles is imported to Afghanistan with cheaper prices. We have sufficient marbles in our factories, but there is no market for our products,” said Ali Mohammad, a marble factory owner in Herat.
Local officials in Herat pledged to take action to help the factory owners resume their operations.
“We need to change our strategy when it comes to imported products,” said Wahid Qatali, the governor of Herat.
